Events

The big events in Big Sur happen mostly on an informal basis: a lurid sunset, whales breaching offshore, or newlyweds vowing to return to 'their' beach.

But several annual community events do take place throughout the year that are well worth planning around. Please call for exact dates.

BIG SUR INTERNATIONAL MARATHON Drawing top runners from around the world, this event was voted 'Best Marathon in North America' by besotted participants. In addition to the full and half marathons, a relay run, 21 mile Power Walk, 5K and 10K events are offered. Highway One closes to traffic for 5 1/2 hours. Lucky runners are entertained by a grand piano at Bixby Bridge, Taiko drummers at Hurricane Point, belly dancers and other diversions along the route. Last Sunday in April. 831-625-6226, www.bsim.org

BIG SUR JAZZFEST Three days of jazz music at venues around Big Sur presented by the Big Sur Arts Initiative. The highlight of the weekend event is "Saturday in the Park", when bands play from morning to night in Pfeiffer Big Sur State Park. 831-6671530, www.bigsurjazz.com

BIG SUR RIVER RUN Runners at this annual October event enjoy pleasant autumn weather and a level course through the redwoods of Pfeiffer Big Sur State Park. Benefits the Big Sur Volunteer Fire Brigade and the Big Sur Health Center. 831-624-4112, www.BigSurRiverRun.org

Jade FestivalHIDDEN GARDENS TOUR One day tour of private gardens takes place in summer. Self-driving tour allows participants a privileged peak into the most glorious gardens in Big Sur. Feel like a resident, if only for a few hours. Artists and musicians in each garden add to the ambience. Presented by the Big Sur Arts Initiative, with all proceeds supporting arts and gardening enrichment in the community. 831-667-1530

JADE FESTIVAL Big Sur beaches are famous for their jade collecting. Talk with local rockhounds, craftsmen and jewelry makers, shop for unique crafts and jewelry, enter to win amazing prizes. Live music and barbecue. This free event takes place annually in October south of Big Sur at the Pacific Valley School. Benefits the South Coast Community Land Trust. 831-394-8315.

HENRY MILLER LIBRARY Call for an events calendar at this community treasure. Musical events, circus performers, open mic nights--stop in and be astounded. 831-667-2574, www.henrymiller.orgHenry Miller Library
